Private Duty Nurse in JupiterOne of the most often-asked questions we get is “What is Private Duty Home Care”?  Simply put, it is a service that was created to provide the elderly assistance with activities of daily living in a familiar setting.  Private duty caregivers offer the elderly the ability to remain in the comfort of their own home, either during a recovery period, or for the duration of an illness.  While in their home, the caregivers not only provide much needed companionship, but can also help with activities such as personal hygiene and grooming, light housekeeping and meal preparation.  They also provide respite care to relieve family members who may be caring for their loved ones on a regular basis.

Should your loved one be serviced in their home and the nurse or caregiver sense any type of situation that may show a potential safety issue, they will let us know that it may be time to consider a facility. The safety and comfort of the client should always come first.

What are “Activities of Daily Living”?

Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs, are common activities that may be come difficult, and in some cases, impossible for an elderly client to achieve.  These activities may include personal grooming tasks such as bathing and laundry, to, in more advanced cases, assistance with using the toilet.  Other activities include shopping for groceries to actual meal preparation.  Depending on the situation, special diets may come into play.  The caregiver see to any dietary notes from physicians and maintain a proper stock of any special items in the home.

Quality caregivers also provide light housekeeping and provide safe pathways.  They are always on the lookout for the safety of the client.

As we get older, it gets more and more difficult for us to keep active.  A private duty caregiver is trained to motivate the client to keep as active as possible.  Depending on the severity of a client’s condition, the caregiver will often encourage the client to assist with meal preparation, take walks outside if feasible, and to keep their minds active with games, reading and/or conversation.
